CSX, a transportation company based in Jacksonville, Florida, recently made the top ten list of Military Friendly US workplaces for 2025.
CSX provides rail, intermodal, and rail-to-truck transportation services to companies throughout the United States in various industries. The company is dedicated to maintaining its military-friendly rating through fully paid training, mentorship opportunities with existing veteran employees, and pay differentials for military service requirements. Approximately one in five of CSX’s employees once served with the US Armed Forces, according to CSX.
CSX has also been included on the Military Times “Best for Vets” list, an annual ranking of employers who offer outstanding programs to integrate veterans into their existing workforces.
Returning to the civilian workforce is one of many challenges veterans may face. According to the VA, servicemembers re-adjusting to civilian life can face challenges like:
- Developing necessary job search skills, including the ability to discuss one’s military experience in ways that employers find relatable,
- Learning new skills or adjusting to a new job – including the social changes that come with working in a civilian workplace,
- Managing fears about job performance and loss, especially if this is a veteran’s first-ever civilian employment; and
- Navigating work with a disability, especially when it may not be immediately clear how the disability will impact the veteran’s ability to do civilian work.
Employers on the Military Friendly Workplace list offer support for veterans seeking to use their skills to support their families and build their careers. Many of these employers offer additional support for veterans seeking to return to the workforce with a disability.
For some veterans, returning to work highlights the need for additional support. Some veterans attempt to return to work, only to discover that disabilities acquired during their military service make civilian work challenging or impossible. Attempting to keep a job can turn into an exercise in frustration.
For these veterans, additional help may be necessary. Attorneys like Tampa’s David W. Magann offer assistance in navigating disability benefits – including benefits for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Gulf War Syndrome, in-service assaults, and death benefits.
